Matthew May (Matt)

Matt May - airborne...!<-- See below for explanation of photo**
Email: matthew.d.may@baesystems.com
Home: Bushey Heath, Herts
What do you do: dancer, singer, musician (not professional:)
Favourite festival(s): Chippenham
Home Page: www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Bluffs/8087/
Instrument(s): mainly woodwind, also anything I can lay my hands on
Likes: lively dances, complex dances, loud music, gentle music, ranting sideways, patter squares, graceful dances...
Dislikes: People who say that other forms of dance are not 'valid' for whatever reason
Other: ** The photo of me might require a small amount of explanation... A dance team from Berea in Kentucky came to visit our Folk Dance Club in Salisbury and one of the people who stayed with our family (myself, in the air on the left, my parents in the middle and my brother not on this photo) noticed that I liked jumping and wanted to take a photo of me doing just that. I, of course was happy to oblige and this photo was taken on the day they left us to carry on their 'tour' of Britain.

Instrument(s): Guitars, keyboards

Claire Milne

Email: clairemilne AT blueyonder DOT co DOT uk
Home: Edinburgh, Scotland
Area of activity: Generally Southern Scotland, Northern England, London and Cambridge. If the gig is good I'll go
What do you do: In order, I love dancers dance floors especially Contra, Scottish Country Dance, Swing and English Ceilidh - oh and French Bourree and Scandy polska
Associations/links: New Scotland (Edinburgh University Scottish Country Dance), Sheffield CeilidhSoc, IVFDF, Swing Patrol - Melbourne Australia
Favourite dance(s): Scottish: JB Milne -because it has this stunning 'meanwhile section' where the dancing couple are casting out and back into a spin in the middle of the dance while all the other dancers are doing rights and lefts (kind of box the gnat four times); Reel of the Puffins - because it is hell-for-leather but really flows; Swedish Masquerade - it changes from march to waltz to polka time and you can muck about with your partner; Pride of Erin Waltz - probably the most romantic waltz on the Scottish dancefloor. Moving off Scottish... Rosza - the English variation on Pride of Erin, because you actually get to hug on the dance floor, any Contra with a gypsy meltdown, and Swing Jam sessions
Fav. band/caller(s): Contra - Wild Asparagus in the US, and I have a special preference for Jabadaw who played the first best English Ceilidh I ever went to. And I'm putting in a special mention for Swing teachers Scott Cupit and Claudia Funder, and Anthony Wheaton and Fi Daff of Swing Patrol, since standard of teaching and dance floor attitude is so good in their dance culture
Favourite festival(s): Definitely IVFDF for its intimate community atmosphere. The Australian Jitterbug Championships - any dancer of any style would LOVE the buzz, the atmosphere the friendliness and the sheer brilliance of this dance floor which is still a comfortable place for all dancers of any level or style. SUSCDF -the Scottish Universities Scottish Country Dance Festival - for the Dems.
Instrument(s): Piano main, fair guitar accomp and OK noise out of most folk instruments but sadly not the fiddle. I also write music and songs and perform them.
Likes: Fast spins and playing with balance with a good dance partner. Dancing TO the music.
Dislikes: People who don't make eye contact when you are dancing with them
Special: I can follow almost any strong lead in any traditional style
Useful talents: I sometimes show people how to maintain their comfort zone on the dance floor while still being 'a nice person'
Other info: I also have hobbies which aren't dancing! Editor's Note: Journalism? (Judging by the predilection for verbosity)  :o))
